A week or so ago @aprilvokey reached out and was interested in whether or not it was true that the eye of a fish can tell us whether it will live or die. It was a great question and something that most anglers are likely familiar with. Given the interest, I decided to post on the topic. Here is the issue: In the first two photos the eyes of the cutthroat are perfectly round and not rolled downwards and appears wide open and static. This is what scientists refer to as a “Dolls eye.” In the third and fourth photos the eye is rolled downwards, something that we hope to see in all photos where we want to release the fish alive. April is right, the eye’s response after angling and during release does tell us something about the fish’s overall health. Salmonids and other fishes display what is called a Vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). VOR is a function of the nervous system. A positive VOR means the fish’s reflex function is intact. A positive VOR occurs when a fish is turned on its side out of the water and the fish’s eye rolls downward to maintain a level pitch, essentially tracking the person who is taking the photo or handling the fish. This is what we see in the last two photos. On the other hand, VOR can become impaired in fish that are highly stressed and close to death. In such situations, like the first two photos, the eye becomes static and does not shift its pitch to keep balanced with the body. This signals the fish’s reflex and nervous system are not normal. In fact, this is the last response to go in salmonids, and consequently, a Doll’s Eye indicates extreme physiological, neurological and behavioral impairment. In my 40+ years of angling, only a handful have ever recovered from the Doll Eye. So if the fish’s eye does not track with the rolling of their body, they are very close to death and have almost no chance of survival. Ultimately then, the best way to save the fish is to avoid putting the fish into bad situations, which is why it is imperative to keep them wet, well oxygenated and minimize handling. #fish #fishing #flyfishing @keepemwetfishing #cutthroat #trou
